Superhero Poetics: How We Wear the “S” on Our Own Chests with Cynthia Manick
Saturday, January 21

What elements or connections frame how we see ourselves in the mirror? The etymology of the self is connected to the family you have or make, the body electric, and how similar we are to myth, animal, or superhero. Everyone has an origin story and it can be real, fantastical, or a combination of both. Are you a superhero, villain, or observer of your own story? And if you could interview Batman or Superman, what answers would they give? In this craft talk and workshop, participants will explore and generate their own creation myths through direct address, confessional, and persona. We will discuss poems by Tina Chang, Joy Harjo, Terrance Hayes, Lucille Clifton, and Tara Betts.
